alpha-hydroxy acidsThese are substances that used commonly in skin care ranges and in higher concentrations in chemical peels to help exfoliate skin and stimulate collagen production. Examples include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and malic acid, which are derived from sugar cane, milk, and pears respectively.

beta-hydroxy acidsSalicylic acid is a form of beta-hydroxy acid and has a similar chemical structure to aspirin. Being oil soluble, it is suitable for acne-prone or oily skin

brow liftSurgical procedure to lift the forehead. Can be done endoscopically.
BTXTrademark name for botulinum toxin type A made by Allergan. Actual name abbreviated because of TGA regulations.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) laserA laser that is attracted to the water in the skin. Ablates skin to resurface wrinkles, scars and sun damage.
chemical peelsA method of removing the top layers of skin by chemicals.

gemini laserA Nd:YAG laser that has two frequencies, 1064nm and 532nm. Used for vascular problems, hair removal and pigmentation removal
gynaecomastiaAlso spelt gynecomastia, a condition where female glandular or breast tissue grows in the male chest
hyperhidrosis
Sweating in excess of normal physiological levels.
hyperpigmentation
Increase in pigmentation
hypopigmentation
Loss of pigmentation
laser
Acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
laser hair removal
A method of permanent hair removal with laser
Lipodissolve
Trademark name for phosphatidylcholine, used to dissolve fatty deposits
liposuction
A surgical method of removing fat
Medlite laser
This is a q-switched laser (short pulses) that has two frequencies, 1064nm and 532nm. It is used to remove pigmentation, tattoos, and fine hair.
melasma
A hormonal form of pigmentation, usually occuring as brown patches on the cheeks, upper lip and forehead.
microdermabrasion
A gentle process of removing the top layer of skin with suction and a diamond coated tip
Nd:YAG
An acronym for Neodymium Yttrium Aluminum Garnet - a type of laser.
photodynamic therapy
A method of using laser or light to activate aminolevulanic acid to cause a chemical reaction in the skin to improve acne or sun damage.
Plasma skin regeneration
An alternative to CO2 lasers. Uses plasma energy to remodel collagen beneath the surface to treat wrinkles, acne scarring, and sun damage.
port wine stain
A red birthmark that is due to congenital malformation of the veins and capillaries in the skin
q-switched laser
A type of laser that emits very short pulses with the use of a q-switch
Retinoids
Derivatives from vitamin A. Causes increased cell turnover, reduced inflammation, and decreased oil production. Suitable for acne and anti-ageing.
rosacea
A condition characterised by redness, flushing, and broken capillaries
Ruby laser

A type of laser that emits a 694nm wavelength that is ruby in colour.

sclerotherapy
A method of closing down veins by injection
skin needlingA procedure that uses a roller with multiple small needles to cause controlled injury to the skin to rejuvenate wrinkles and acne scarring.
