Leg Veins, Spider Veins

How can leg veins be treated?

Leg veins can be treated with laser, injections (sclerotherapy), or by surgery.

Sclerotherapy is the gold standard in the treatment of leg veins and involves injecting a substance into the vein to shut down the dilated vein, allowing blood to take a more favourable channel back to the heart. Currently Sclerotherapy is only being treated by our specialist doctor in Templestowe.

Laser can also be used to close smaller leg veins. It is generally not as effective as sclerotherapy, however, it does not require the use of needles for those who are needle-phobic. It can also treat 'matting' - a condition where there are a lot of small veins concentrated in one spot.  Furthermore, no compression stockings need to be worn after the laser treatment, unlike sclerotherapy. At The Victorian Cosmetic Institute, our doctors use a Gemini laser to help reduce leg veins.

Finally, varicose vein surgery or stripping is a procedure that can be performed for the treatment of leg veins. It is an antiquated method now, as the procedure is relatively invasive, and the veins tend to recur in most cases.  We do not perform this treatment at The Victorian Cosmetic Institute, but our doctors would provide a referral if surgery was felt to be the only option.

Making that first phone call can be a confronting task - many of our patients have preferred filling out our online enquiry form. We can then contact you with an understanding of the results you are hopeful of achieving and ensure the treatment is appropriate.

It's as easy as clicking either of the buttons below and completing the provided form.
