In this video Dr Sara Read demonstrates the use of the gemini laser to treat a spider haemangioma port wine stain.
Vascular birthmarks or spider haemangiomas begin to appear in early infancy. Sometimes they disappear within the first year of a child's life, but occasionally they last for 10 or more years. In this instance and for the child's self-esteem parents opt to have them removed.
Two types of Gemini laser treatments are available for cosmetic repair. Lasers are commonly used on the face, neck, chest, back and hands. The KTP laser emits a wavelength of 532nm and when directed at the skin lesion causes photo-thermal injury to the site. This Gemini laser is used to treat broken capillaries, rosacea, freckles, port wine stains, seborrhoeic keratosis, skin tags, sunspots and hyperpigmentation.
The Nd:YAG laser emit's a wavelength of 1064nm. This wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin and is commonly used to treat spider leg veins, deeper facial veins, venous lakes, tattoos and hair removal.
The Gemini laser spider haemangioma treatment involves holding the laser over the area to be treated without coming into direct contact with the skin. The light ray is then pulsed over the affected area. Treatment using the KTP is painless and patients report only feeling a slightly warm sensation. The treated area may redden but clears within a few days.
Treatment using the Nd:YAG laser can be made more comfortable by the application of topical local anesthetic. The Gemini laser is attracted to the oxyhemoglobin in the vascular formations. The surrounding skin remains unaffected and the skin's blood circulation remains normal.
This video shows the skin, lesion formation and blood circulation before and after Gemini laser spider haemangioma treatment. Following laser application the capillary anomaly appears to disappear, while the skin on the child's face looks perfectly normal.
The Gemini laser spider haemangioma treatment and other painless nonsurgical cosmetic treatments are available at The Victorian Cosmetic Institute. These procedures should be performed by a doctor experienced in lasers. The treatments are less expensive than traditional surgical options and are performed on an out-patient basis. The number of laser treatments required to remove the lesion will be determined by the physician.
