A non-surgical procedure using 'anti-wrinkle injections' (the real name
of this product cannot be used due to TGA restrictions) to help to slim
and reshape the jawline. It is injected into the chewing muscles
(masseter muscles) to help reduce their bulk and activity. The result
is a slimmer and less square jawline. For more information on this procedure, click here.
In this video Dr Gavin Chan MBBS provides a demonstration of a procedure used to reduce a prominent jaw line, slim the face and enhance the cheeks. Dr. Gavin Chan, MBBS performs this procedure on his receptionist, Michelle.
Dr. Chan highlights that patients who clench their teeth often have a larger masseter muscle, which tends to make their jaw line more square and prominent. The masseter muscle is the muscle that raises the lower jaw and assists in chewing. Teeth grinding can also result in headaches. The jawline reshaping procedure will cause the masseter muscle on either side of Michelles face to relax and this will create a more slim line to her face.
It is important that only the masseter muscle receive the injection. Dr. Chan asks the patient to clench her jaw, carefully marking the slight bulge of muscle on either side of her face. He then asks her to smile and points out that if the muscles involved in smiling are injected, the result may be a droopy mouth. He then injects a medication, into three separate sites on both sides of Michelles face, being careful to stay below the muscles that control her smile.
Due to restrictions of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Dr. Chan cannot reveal the medication that he is injecting into his patient, but comments that it is a substance often used to relax frowns in an individuals forehead. The effects of the jaw line reshaping procedure take two months to take full effect and last about six months. Periodic injections are required to maintain the effect of this treatment. Initially the patient may experience slight bruising or swelling at the injection site. Swelling goes down quickly, in thirty minutes or so and bruising disappears in a few days.
This is a minimally invasive procedure requiring no cutting or stitching and consequently no time off from work or reduction of ones social life. It is a good option for individuals wanting a slimmer jaw line without the trauma of surgery, as well as migraine sufferers
