In this Video Dr. Sara Read from The Victorian Cosmetic Institute performs a Gemini laser treatment on a patient with a facial port wine stain.
Dr. Sara Read, a physician at The Victorian Cosmetic Institute?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Templestowe clinic, demonstrates the use of the Gemini laser to remove a port wine stain from the face of a patient. Dr. Read is a cosmetic physician who has a special interest in the use of medical lasers, such as the Gemini laser, to improve patient health and appearance.
In the video, a patient with a considerable port wine stain, also known as a port wine hemangioma,
undergoes treatment with the Gemini laser. As Dr. Read guides the laser
hand piece over the port wine stain, laser pulses of a specific
wavelength that is attracted to the port wine stains pass through the
outer layers of the patient?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s skin to its target. Dr. Read has prepared
the patient for as little discomfort as possible by placing a clear
anesthetic gel over the area where the laser will be pulsed. The
patient is also inhaling anaesthetic gas to decrease discomfort. The
pulses of laser light are delivered from a smooth glass probe that
glides over the skin.
During the procedure, which takes place in an outpatient setting at the
state-of-the-art clinic, the patient is awake and calm. As Dr. Read
notes, treatment consists of approximately 15 sessions with the Gemini
laser. Each treatment lasts only a few minutes. While some temporary
darkening of the port wine stain appears after each session, overall,
the stain is lightening each time, until it is completely removed.
Despite the intense power of a laser, the Gemini laser is a safe and
effective medical tool, especially in the hands of a highly trained
physician such as Dr. Read. Through a series of short sessions, the
port wine stain is destroyed by the Gemini laser, while the tissue
surrounding the stain is only minimally disrupted. Some patients report
a slight temporary stinging sensation as the pulses of light target the
port wine stain.
Gemini lasers have proven to be a safe and extremely effective medical
tool. Through brief sessions, where the patient remains comfortable and
alert, skilled physicians such as Dr. Read use its power to remove the
troublesome port wine stains, while leaving the rest of the facial skin
untouched and undamaged. After a brief healing period, the stain is
visibly lightened, until at the end of the sessions, it is permanently
absent.
