Dr. Natasha Moscato discusses the use of TCA CROSS treatments for acne scarring
This video features Dr. Natasha Moscato of the Victorian Cosmetic Institute performing a TCA cross treatment for acne scarring. This treatment uses 100 percent trichloroacetic acid in order to improve pitted scarring. The acid is applied with a toothpick to each individual scar, causing collagen reorganisation and thickening of the dermis. The result is that the pitted scar is raised towards the level of the rest of the skin, causing significant improvement in appearance.
One advantage of this treatment is that TCA cross may be safely used on all skin colors and types, including darker skin. This is not true for laser resurfacing or skin peels.
During the treatment, TCA is very carefully applied to each pitted acne scar. As soon as the acid makes contact with the skin, some "frosting" occurs. This is indicative of coagulation of proteins in the skin. The acid encourages collagen rebuilding and creates a thicker dermis. After the session, small scabs will appear on the skin and peel off, revealing an improved appearance in the area of the acne scar. Generally, pitted scars will be visibly less deep after each treatment.
Multiple sessions are usually required for ideal TCA cross results. These sessions are scheduled two months apart. TCA cross is an "in and out" office procedure that requires very little recovery time; scabs heal in a matter of days.
Dr. Moscato recommends TCA cross as an easy, low cost option for localized acne scarring treatment. It is appropriate for all skin types and tones, making it a superb alternative to peels or laser treatment.
