What is Blepharoplasty?

This refers to the procedure that improves the shape of the eyelids. The eyelid skin is the thinnest skin of the face and may be significantly affected by the ageing process. There are various surgical options;

Upper eyelids

With the passage of time the skin stretches and the excess, under the influence of gravity, produces hooding. The excess skin is removed under local anaesthesia and sedation.

Lower eyelids

The lower eyelid skin becomes stretched by the fat behind it, causing the appearance of bags. The bags respond to removing the fat behind them under local anaesthesia and sedation.

Laser eyelid surgery

Laser can be used instead of a scalpel to make the incisions required for eyelid surgery. Laser causes less bleeding, and enhances recovery.

What causes hooding of the upper eyelids and bagginess of the lower ones?

The skin of the face tends to lose elasticity with ageing, especially the facial skin, since it is continually exposed to the environmental elements. This is especially so of the eyelid skin since, being the thinnest skin of the face, it is the first to show deterioration.
In the upper lid, the thinned skin stretches. This excess skin forms folds which gravity pulls downwards to produce the effect of hooding. Sometimes this extra skin actually comes to rest on the bases of the eyelashes at the margin of the eyelid.

The removal of the excess skin produces a long term improvement: in most cases for a lifetime.

In the lower eyelid, the thinning skin is unable to hold back the fat behind it, even though the fat is not excessive in amount. However, the treatment is to reduce the pressure con the lower eyelid skin by removing some of it to flatten the bag.

If with removal of the bag (bulge) the skin is finely wrinkled, laser skin resurfacing can tighten the skin.

Who is suitable for blepharoplasty?

Anyone who has unsightly hooding of the upper eyelids or has baggy lower eyelids.
Both of these unaesthetic features can make a person look perpetually tired and such people frequently comment how annoying it is for others to suggest that they need more rest when they don’t!

Following the consultation, what needs to be done before the procedure?

You have a pre-operative consultation a week or two before the procedure. This involves a screening blood test before photographs and an examination by an ophthalmologist together with answering any last-minute questions.

How soon can I return to work or mix socially?

One week after an upper blepharoplasty, you will have a suture removed from the upper eyelid. Prior to that, dark glasses provide an adequate disguise. There are no sutures with a lower blepharoplasty, since it is performed from the inner aspect of the eyelid.

In both cases, 7 to 8 days is usually sufficient before going back to work or mixing socially.
