What are bio-remodelling injections?

Bio-remodelling injections are the latest anti-ageing treatment to promote the remodelling of ageing, crepey, lax or sagging skin tissue and improve skin quality and firmness. Due to TGA regulations, we cannot name the product online.

Although bio-remodelling injections are made from hyaluronic acid, the same constituent as most dermal fillers, they have different properties and do not fill the face. Instead, they stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.

As we age, our skin is depleted of its natural collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Bio-remodelling injections are a specific formulation of high and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid targeted to stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin, improving skin quality and helping to reduce and prevent skin ageing.  Treatment results are complemented by the Profhilo Haenkenium antioxidant hyaluronic acid moisturiser, which furthers the hydration and skin luminosity provided by the injectable treatment.

Bio-remodelling injections are most commonly used to treat the skin on the face, neck, decolletage, or back of hands.

Having been available since 2015 in other parts of the world, including Europe, the UK, and Russia, this treatment was only recently approved by the TGA and introduced in Australia in 2022.

In summary, bio-remodelling injections are different to skin boosters in their unique method of administration and ability to stimulate collagen. They differ from traditional dermal fillers also, as they do not add volume or lead to overfilling but instead are aimed towards improving skin quality.

How does bio-remodelling treatment work?

Injectable bio-remodelling treatments are injectable anti-ageing treatments, made with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid and designed to spread like honey when injected into the skin. Bio-remodelling treatments have been scientifically shown in studies to improve wound healing and the production of type I and III collagen. The hyaluronic acid in bio-remodelling injections also works to hydrate the skin. This results in smoother, firmer, tighter and younger-looking skin whilst slowing skin ageing.

The image below demonstrates the role that collagen and elastin have in helping to support and provide structure to the uppermost layers of your skin.

Are bio-remodelling injections the same as facial fillers?

Despite both being made of hyaluronic acid, bio-remodelling injections are not ‘fillers’ as they do not add facial volume. Fillers are made from (chemically) cross-linked hyaluronic acid that gives them their gel-like properties and are designed to fill and create volume in the areas they are injected. This may include areas such as the lips, cheeks and temples, to address facial volume loss. Despite their name, ‘dermal’ fillers are not injected into the skin, but instead injected much deeper. Conversely, bio-remodelling injections are injected directly into the skin.

Bio-remodelling injections are made of non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, and are stabilised using a heat process. They do not fill or create volume in one specific area. Typically, they are injected into various skin points at a superficial level. After injection, they spread over a large surface area and stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin.

However, bio-remodelling injections can be combined with facial fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to synergise their effects;

  • Fillers target facial contouring, volume loss and facial proportions
  • Bio-remodelling injections will address the skin
  • Anti-wrinkle injections address expression lines

all help reduce ageing and promote a more youthful, healthy and attractive appearance.

What are the benefits of having bio-remodelling?

Bio-remodelling is a way of treating the underlying changes in your skin. Is it highly likely that most patients will be having dermal filler treatment less frequently if the patient is being treated with bio-remodelling injections.

Benefits of having bio-remodelling injections include:

  • Stimulates the elastin production and collagen production
  • Improves skin laxity, firmness and elasticity
  • Hyaluronic acid hydrates skin from the inside to improve skin texture and tone
  • Minimally invasive treatment
  • Suitable for most people
  • Regular use will not add to facial volume and make you look over-filled

In the above example, this patient had imaging taken using VISIA Skin Analysis before and after her bio-remodelling treatment. The second set of photos, taken 2 months following her single bio-remodelling treatment, show an improvement to wrinkles and skin texture. A reduction in her TruAge can also be seen. TruAge estimates a person’s biological age using advanced algorithms based on their skin’s condition, which may differ from their chronological age.

Where can bio-remodelling be used?

Areas such as the face, neck, décolletage and back of hands can be treated with bio-remodelling injections. Potentially, they can also be used in other parts of the body

In the face, bio-remodelling injections are strategically placed in Bio-Aesthetic-Points or BAPs to optimise the effect or outcome of the procedure. The injected hyaluronic acid then quickly disperses underneath the skin to cover a large surface area to impart its effect on the skin.

The neck, décolletage and back of hands are also very common areas to be treated. These areas are often exposed to UV radiation, are finer and less sebaceous (oily) than facial skin and are prone to accelerated ageing compared to the face. Bio-remodelling injections are useful in stimulating new collagen and elastin to help reverse skin ageing in these areas.

Who are bio-remodelling injections suitable for?

This anti-ageing treatment is suitable for anyone who has noticed mild wrinkles, dull skin, loss of elasticity, hydration and skin laxity. Genetics and lifestyle factors contribute to when this occurs, however most people will begin noticing these changes to their skin from around the age of 30 years old. Bio-remodelling injections are an excellent way to address signs of premature ageing, skin crepiness and hydration.

It is not recommended for people who are pregnant, breastfeeding, have skin infections at the treatment site, or if you have an allergy to hyaluronic. We also advise waiting two weeks after receiving any vaccination.

As with all our cosmetic medical procedures a consultation is required with our Cosmetic Doctors or Cosmetic Nurses to determine your suitability for this treatment.

What are the risks and side effects associated with bio-remodelling injectables?

Bio-remodelling injections are clinically and scientifically proven treatment in treating and preventing skin ageing. It is important to note that, like all medical procedures, there can be risks, even if they are rare.

Risks may include;

  • Swelling and redness at the injection site.
  • Persistent lumps lasting greater than 24 hours
  • Skin infection – although rare when performed with a clean injection technique
  • Vascular occlusion – the depth of injection sites used for bio-remodelling injections makes the risk of a vascular occlusion extremely rare and to date there have been no reported vascular occlusions.

The most common side effect is raised bumps at the injection site, which usually resolve within 24 to 48hrs but can take up to a week if injections are too superficial. Bruising is a minor side effect that may occur however usually resolves within a couple of days. Like with all skin penetrating injections, we use an Accuvein device to reduce the risk of bruising.

How do I prepare for bio-remodelling?

There is no particular preparation prior to having your bio-remodelling injections, although it is best to avoid alcohol for at least 24hrs prior to treatment. Any non-prescribed blood thinning supplements such as fish oil, krill oil, Vitamin E, Garlic and Ginkgo Biloba should be stopped at least 7 days prior to your treatment to prevent bruising from occurring. Do not cease taking any medications without first consulting your doctor.

What does the treatment involve?

After consultation with your practitioner, a treatment session is planned. Further treatments can also be planned to further improve results. Treatment with bio-remodelling injections at Victorian Cosmetic Institute involves;

  • The application of numbing cream to the treatment area, e.g. the face, for approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before treatment
  • Cleansing of the skin with an antiseptic
  • Marking of the points to be injected
  • The use of an Accuvein vein finder or an ultrasound device to check the position of (and to avoid) any blood vessels in the treatment area.
  • Local anaesthetic is injected into the points to be injected
  • The bio-remodelling injections are then injected into the pre-marked/numbed injection points

How long does bio-remodelling treatment take?

The treatment itself requires approximately 30 minutes, excluding any time for numbing cream.

How many bio-remodelling injections do I need?

For best results we recommend two or three treatments performed one month apart. Some patients have been happy with the results seen after one treatment and return every 6 months or so for another treatment. The amount of treatments required and the timeframe between treatments can vary greatly between patients.

It can also depend on your skin condition, age, and whether you are using any cosmeceutical skin care to enhance your results, such as the Profhilo Antioxidant Moisturiser. Additionally, daily use of sunscreen will ensure that UV radiation does not cause further ageing to your skin.

What results can I expect with bio-remodelling?

As you age your skin’s production of hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin decreases and the existing stores of these essential skin plumping proteins degrade. Collagen and elastin is required to give your skin a firm and youthful appearance. Injected just below the skin surface, bio-remodelling injections spread quickly to the areas needed to provide instant hydration, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles in the process. Patients report a glowing appearance in the hours and days following their treatment. The bio-remodelling continues over the weeks and months to continue generating more collagen and elastin.

Treatment results are not as initially noticeable as dermal fillers, instead they are designed to provide an overall skin rejuvenation treatment with natural looking results.

FAQs

Are bio-remodelling injectables painful?

Bio-remodelling injections are made very comfortable by our practitioners injecting a small amount of local anaesthetic at the treatment sites to completely numb the area to be treated. You can also opt to attend your appointment earlier to have topical numbing cream applied if you would prefer. This is at no additional cost to you.

How long do the results last?

Some immediate improvements can be noticed due to the hyaluronic acid. Treatment results generally last 6 months following your last bio-remodelling injection treatment. Although some patients will be happy with their results following one treatment, for best results we recommend having two to three treatments spaced one month apart

Bio-remodelling results will continue to improve in the months following treatment as new collagen protein is formed within your skin. During this time skin elasticity and skin laxity also continues to improve.

Can I combine bio-remodelling with other treatments?

Yes, you can combine treatments. The most common treatment combinations are dermal filler or anti-wrinkle injections in the same appointment. If you wish to further improve your skin texture and tone we also recommend a course of chemical peels.

How much does bio-remodelling treatment cost?

You can see the pricing for this treatment on our pricing page.
