What is a non-surgical eyebrow lift?

Traditionally, the only method of lifting your eyebrows up was brow lift surgery. This is often also referred to as a forehead lift. One method used to surgically lift brows is the coronal brow lift. An incision is made in the hair line, and the forehead is pulled backwards to lift the brows. More commonly, the procedure is now performed via keyhole surgery (endoscopic brow lift).

Non-surgically, it is now possible to lift the eyebrows and rejuvenate the eye area, using anti-wrinkle injections and/or dermal fillers.

Types of non-surgical brow lift procedures

There are a couple of different non-surgical brow lift techniques that may be suitable for you depending on your face, your age and your aesthetic goals.

Firstly by using anti-wrinkle injections, it is possible to relax certain muscles around the eyes to help create an overall lift in the eyebrows. There are certain muscles that hold the eyebrows down, especially the muscle surrounding the eye, known as orbicularis oculi. With careful placement of anti-wrinkle injections into these muscles, the eyebrows are released from this downward pull, and the forehead muscles (frontalis muscle) are left to lift the eyebrows up without being antagonised. This usually leads to an extra few millimetres in eyebrow height.

Secondly, by injecting a dermal filler underneath the eyebrow, support can be given to the eyebrow to elevate the eyebrow up. Usually 1/2 to 1 syringe of product is required in this area. It also helps to soften the bony orbital rim around the eyebrows, leading to a softer and more youthful appearance. The ‘skeletonisation’ of the brow is a feature of the ageing process and by placing fillers on the bony rim, we can soften this area and reduce the visibility of the underlying skull.

Finally, dermal fillers can be used in the middle half of the upper lid/brow to help reduce the apparent sag of the eyelids. Usually, upper eyelids droop from the outer half first, and this makes the middle half look relatively hollow. By filling the middle half of the brow/eyelid, this balances the appearance of the upper eyelid and reduces the apparent droop of the eyelid (see case study below).

Reasons for choosing non-surgical brow lifts

Upper eyelid hollowing correction

The appearance of your eyebrows can be heavily impacted by the structures (bone, muscle, fat pads and volume) both above and below them. With hollowing of the upper eyelid the eyebrows appear like they are heavy and sagging downward, a significant sign of ageing. Using dermal fillers, the upper eyelid volume can be restored, rejuvenating the appearance of the brows and framing a more youthful face.

Reduce the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines

A brow lift can help to improve the appearance of facial wrinkles and forehead creases because it increases the firmness and elasticity of the skin around the eyebrows. It will pull the skin tighter and smooth any forehead lines around the brow area.

Reposition the eyebrows

A brow lift will also pull the eyebrows into a higher position, providing a more youthful appearance. This can be done by either using anti-wrinkle injections in the forehead muscles or placing dermal fillers underneath the eyebrows.

When should patients consider this?

The perfect candidate for a non-surgical brow lift is someone who is looking for a subtle lift or who has only just started noticing their sagging brows. It could also be a good option for someone who is not ready to have surgery or who is medically not fit to do so.

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should not consider a non-surgical brow lift.

Possible risks and complications

The risk of complications after having a non-surgical brow lift procedure is quite low, especially if it is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.

However, if the injections cause a blood clot or a blocked artery, blindness can occur in very rare cases.

What should I expect during the procedure

Non-surgical brow lift procedures take about 20 minutes and should be fairly quick and comfortable. No anaesthetic is required, and you should be fit to drive home immediately after the procedure.

Recovery and after care

There is little to no downtime associated with this procedure. You should be able to return to work immediately, but you should avoid makeup and strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.

You may experience some minor bruising and swelling for a few days after the procedure. Your doctor will give you advice on how to manage this.
