Do you ever look at yourself in the mirror and wish the crow’s feet around your eye area could be reduced? Crow’s feet (sometimes called ‘smile lines’) are a positive facial expression that we all have when we laugh or smile. As part of the natural ageing process, the repetitive muscle movement can result in the crow’s feet becoming deeper and obvious even when you’re not smiling and laughing. Anti-wrinkle injections are very effective at smoothing out and reducing lines around your eyes, but as Dr Gavin Chan notes the best anti-wrinkle crow’s feet treatment will subtly refresh the eye area.

While removing all signs of crow’s feet around your eyes is possible, it does not look natural or visually pleasing. If an inappropriate dose of anti-wrinkle injections is used, or if it’s injected in the wrong area, the patient can end up looking frozen or weird.

Why do crow’s feet appear around your eyes?

Crows Feet Dr Gavin Explains

Dr Gavin Chan explains that crow’s feet are the fine to deeper lines that spread from the outer corners of your eyes when you smile. As you smile, the orbicularis oculi muscles contract around your eye socket, pulling your eye skin inward.

The fine lines and deep wrinkled crow’s feet form because of this repetitive movement, which results in the skin creasing and the collagen and elastic fibres breaking down. Because the skin around your eyes is delicate and thin, this can be the first area of your face to show signs of ageing.

How are crow’s feet treated with anti-wrinkle injections?

Since 2005 we have successfully treated crow’s feet with anti-wrinkle injections With several brands to consider, we’re not able to name the products we use due to Therapeutic Goods Administration rules.

Our anti-wrinkle injections contain a protein that triggers the injected facial muscle to relax and smooth out the wrinkles in the treatment area. After you have anti-wrinkle injections around your crow’s feet the muscles are temporarily weakened. This reduces their ability to crease the skin around your eyes, giving you a more relaxed, smooth appearance. Using an appropriate dose of anti-wrinkle injections in the crow’s feet area will help you achieve a natural, fresh result. A presence of crow’s feet around your eyes is natural and gives you the ability to smile, laugh and express yourself. We believe that anti-wrinkle injections should moderate the severity or intensity of your crow’s feet but never make your face look frozen or weird. It is important to note that if the lines around your eyes are deep, dermal filler treatment may also be required to reduce and smooth out your crow’s feet.

Within a few days after your crow’s feet treatment you may see noticeable improvements in the treatment area, but most patients report seeing the best anti-wrinkle injection results 7 to 10 days after treatment.

What does anti-wrinkle crow’s feet treatment feel like?

One of the key concerns people have about having anti-wrinkle crow’s feet treatment is that it may be painful or leave bruises. Led by Dr Gavin Chan, our highly trained and experienced Cosmetic Doctors and Cosmetic Nurses offer specific techniques to minimise any discomfort or bruising including:

  • Ice: Because pain and temperature sensation travel along the same nerve pathway, using ice on your skin before your anti-wrinkle injections ensures less pain will be felt.
  • Inhaled anaesthetic gas: Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is commonly used for dental procedures or during labour. The effect of the inhaled anaesthetic gases we use tends to wear off quickly without any lingering effects after the crow’s feet treatment is completed.
  • Local anaesthetic cream: Before your anti-wrinkle injections, an application of local anaesthetic cream can be applied to your skin to help numb it.
  • Vibration: When a vibrating device is used on your skin, nerve pathways that conduct pain become overloaded with vibrations and are unable to pass pain signals to the brain as easily.

Another key concern is that having crow’s feet anti-wrinkle treatment will result in bruising could occur. Bruising occurs when a needle disrupts a vein under your skin. To reduce the likelihood of this happening, we use the Accuvein Vein Finder. This hand held device visualises the veins beneath your skin, and helps the Cosmetic Doctor or Cosmetic Nurse make adjustments to their injection points to avoid your veins and reduce the risk of bruising.
