Do your hands give away your age? While the face is most often the focus of cosmetic treatments, ageing skin on the back of your hands can also be improved. Dr Gavin Chan (MBBS, Cosmetic Physician, Liposuctionist) recently helped a patient in her 50’s improve the appearance of her hands by using dermal filler treatment. Through treating her face with anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler treatment the patient looked and felt younger and more confident and she was keen to feel the same way about her hands.

Rejuvenating hands using dermal filler treatment is increasing in popularity as more people realise that hand cream alone will not combat the ageing process. Ideal candidates for this type of non-surgical cosmetic treatment include people who are concerned about:
• Fine lines, wrinkles and age spots on their hands, and
• A loss of volume and plumpness, resulting in a bony, aged look.

This ‘walk-in, walk-out’ non-invasive treatment has no downtime and in many patients lasts for up to 18 months.

What causes hands to age?

According to Dr Gavin Chan the main ‘giveaways’ of your age include lines and wrinkles on your face and neck, age spots and wrinkles on your décolletage and spots and thin skin on the backs of your hands. During the ageing process, your skin loses volume and elasticity and becomes thinner due to collagen loss.

As a result the underlying veins, bones and tendons in the back of your hands become noticeable. When combined with sun exposure and UV damage, even the most cared for hands can appear old and frail.

How does filler treatment restore and rejuvenated hands?

The dermal filler treatment that Dr Gavin Chan and his team of highly trained and experienced Cosmetic Doctors and Cosmetic Nurses prefer to use for hand rejuvenation is Radiesse. This dermal filler treatment adds volume and improves the texture of the hands with the added benefit of being “a collagen stimulator which stimulates the production of new collagen (a process called neocollagenesis)”.

This type of dermal filler is composed of a temporary filler (carboxymethylcellulose) that improves the look of the hands and an active ingredient called calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHa) that works to stimulate the collagen (a process that can take up to 3 months). Local anaesthetic is mixed into the dermal filler to reduce the likelihood of any discomfort during the treatment.

What to expect during your collagen hand rejuvenation treatment

During Dr Gavin Chan’s consultation with the patient, he noted that dermal filler treatment would add volume to her hands to reduce the appearance of veins and tendons and “make her hands look younger by improving the quality of the skin tone and texture.”

Before the patient’s collagen hand rejuvenation treatment Dr Gavin Chan used an Accuvein hand held device to mark out the veins on her hands. By taking the time and care to do this, these veins can be avoided during the treatment which decreases the likelihood of bruising.

Dr Gavin Chan then injected local anaesthetic into the spaces of her 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th fingers. After these areas were numb, a sharp needle was used to make two small holes through which a blunt tipped cannula was inserted.

He notes that “using a long, blunt tipped cannula we can reach all of the areas of the hand with two small injections point in each hand to ‘fan out’ the dermal filler throughout the hand area.”

After injecting the dermal fillers, Dr Gavin Chan massaged the patient’s hands to ensure they were smooth “There’s no residual lumpiness and even though there is slight swelling, because of the temporary filler her hands look great straight away.”

The results from one collagen hand rejuvenation treatment usually last between 12 to 18 months, with some patients experiencing even longer-term improvements.

The best skin care to use to prevent sun damage on your hands

After your hand rejuvenation with dermal filler treatment, it is important to use sunscreen on the backs of your hands every day to prevent ageing and developing sun spots. Synergie Uberzinc Body is a non-greasy, deeply hydrating UV sunscreen that effectively protects all areas of the body exposed to UV light. The combination of 21% Zinc Oxide with Vitamin D3 protects against UV exposure while helping replenish low Vitamin D levels. Feeling more like a luxurious hand and body lotion than a sunscreen, your skin will stay nourished and protected against harsh UV rays.
