Do you ever see magazine covers and images of celebrities and models online and wish you could look like that? With no wrinkles and fine lines, their smooth and flawless complexion makes them appear youthful and healthy. While you know that Photoshop has probably been used, it can feel disconcerting that you don’t look as perfect as that. But it is possible to look like a perfect Photoshop image in real life. Dr Gavin Chan (MBBS, Cosmetic Physician, Liposuctionist) understands how you feel and decided to find out how a Photoshop image of a client compared with the result of having anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and laser treatment.

How Cosmetic Doctors assess your face to determine how to enhance it

Before you have any cosmetic facial enhancements, it is important that the Cosmetic Doctor or Cosmetic Nurse takes the time to consult with you and closely assess your face. Dr Gavin Chan started to evaluate Amy’s face and skin by using a tape measure to measure the length of the upper third, mid third and lower third of her face. From this assessment he commented that she needed more enhancement in the lower areas of her face.

Another technique that Dr Gavin Chan used was the golden ratio, which uses callipers to measure the face. A ratio of 1 to 1.618 is considered to be aesthetically pleasing. In Amy’s case he discovered that her forehead, nose length and width were perfect but her chin was shorter. Dr Gavin Chan notes that while these tools are effective, an experienced Cosmetic Doctor and Cosmetic Nurse will also have an ‘aesthetic eye’ to determine which parts of the face could be enhanced.

To reduce the likelihood of bruising during the treatments, Dr Gavin Chan used a machine called the Accuvein to track where are all the veins are on the face

Since 2005, led by Dr Gavin Chan our highly trained and experienced Cosmetic Doctors and Cosmetic Nurses have assessed and treated thousands of people to help them regain a fresher, more youthful look. When you choose to have non-surgical facial rejuvenation, it is very important to attend a reputable medical clinic that specialises in these procedures. How Cosmetic Doctors can make you look like a fresher version of yourself, without going under the knife

After Dr Gavin Chan consulted with and assessed Amy’s face he explained that anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and laser treatment would reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone and increase volume in areas of the face that were hollow.

Anti-wrinkle injections are based on an inhibitor that relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic and permanent static facial lines and wrinkles. We can use anti-wrinkle injections to treat frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. They can also be used to reduce your down-turning mouth, reduce chin dimpling and slim down your jawline.

Dermal fillers are effective at replacing facial volume that is lost as a result of the ageing process. They are made from a clear gel produced from a substance that is naturally found in the skin.

The first signs of facial volume loss can appear from the age of 40 years old, however in some people it may occur sooner. We use dermal fillers to address areas that include:

  • Adding volume and shape to your lips
  • Reducing downward turning corners of your mouth
  • Lengthening a short chin
  • Adding volume to your cheeks to reduce the hollow appearance
  • Adding volume to your tear trough area so you don’t look as tired

Laser treatment

Dr Gavin Chan points out that, “while Photoshop can make the skin look better, we can remove skin pigmentation, reduce redness and get rid of freckles with lasers.” The type of laser treatment used will depend on the type of skin you have, the condition of your skin and the amount of time you have for recovery. To address Amy’s freckles and skin pigmentation, Dr Gavin Chan decided to use the Fraxel laser. This hand held laser is attracted to water and fires microscopic columns of laser energy into the skin. One benefit of using the Fraxel laser is that the skin between the columns of laser energy is not affected, resulting in less downtime for the patient.

At Amy’s review appointment, Dr Gavin Chan noted that (26.42), “despite having a 7 day recovery time (as opposed to Photoshop which was an instantaneous result) Amy’s skin looks healthy, natural and fresher.”

What really happens during the Photoshop process?

Photoshop is an image editing software that is used to resize, crop, manipulate and colour correct digital photos. Explaining how he uses Photoshop to enhance beauty photos, the full time freelance photographer based in Singapore begins by, “removing anything that is distracting including pigmentation, an uneven complexion, asymmetrical facial contours, ageing spots, warts and pimples.”

During the process of retouching (16.45) he starts by smoothing out the hair and removing any strands on the face. From there he moves onto removing any visible veins, wrinkles, fine lines and uneven skin tones. Any facial redness and dryness is also removed. Colour correction is used to match the neck and face skin tone and colour. Once the skin has been enhanced, it’s time to contour the face, brighten the eyes, increase and/or reshape the lips and remove any eye bags.

Final results of Photoshop V Cosmetic Surgeon battle

When our patient Amy saw the Photoshop version of herself she pointed out that while there were no imperfections, “None of my friends would recognise me. My face has no structure and appears fake’’. While Photoshop is instantaneous and has no down time or recovery, the results are only on the computer screen, not reflected on the client’s face.

Comparing the Photoshop results to the non-surgical facial rejuvenation results our patient said that her friends told her she looked less tired, more vibrant and happier. Her fresh, natural look has also made her feel more confident.
