As we get older, our skin naturally loses elasticity and volume in certain parts of our face. Our skin starts to produce less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and we lose some of our facial shape. Sometimes this process can cause the area around our skin to sag.

Dermal fillers can be used to tighten our skin, replace lost volume or contour the shape of the chin without the need for chin augmentation surgery. Fillers are mostly composed of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that is naturally found in our body.

What is the goal of chin filler?

Chin filler injections are used to shape and contour the chin and tighten the skin. They are injected in small amounts in specific, precise locations in order to achieve the patient’s particular goals.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal filler can be injected in the chin to make you look younger and feel more beautiful. During the ageing process, the skull rotates and the chin moves backwards. This skull movement leads to bone and soft tissue in the chin area dissolving, resulting in reduced structural support in the lower face.

Faces also age because the skin’s supportive network of collagen, molecules and elastin breaks down. This leads to the muscles that are pulling your face up, to weaken  and the muscles that pull your face down, to strengthen.

Dermal filler can replace this structural support and change the contours of your chin. Using fillers, we can make your chin appear more prominent or increase its definition. While many of our female patients want to have a softer contoured chin, our male chin filler patients like to have a more chiselled chin.

Dermal fillers are cosmetic injections that revolumise and restore areas of the face non-surgically. Many cosmetic filler options are made from a clear gel composed of a substance that is naturally found in skin. The fillers vary with their thickness, viscosity, and longevity. Finer, smoother ones don’t last as long, while thicker ones usually last longer. In Australia, there are several filler brands to consider using. We’re not able to name each of the products we use due to Therapeutic Goods Administration rules. You can read more details about dermal fillers here.

How can chin filler treatment improve the shape of the chin and jaw?

Dermal fillers can improve the:

  • Size of your chin: We can increase the size of your chin using dermal fillers.
  • Length of your chin: Some of our patients are too short in the chin. We can easily remedy this by using dermal fillers to lengthen their chin.
  • Projection of the chin: It’s very common for our patients to have a recessive chin when viewed from the side. Using dermal fillers, we can create a more projected, stronger chin.
  • Shape of the chin: Our patients may need more width, more length, more angular or less angular chins. If our patients want a less pointy chin, we can make it more round. If our patients think that their chins are too square, we can make them look more round. At the consultation, every patient is thoroughly assessed. During this assessment, the cosmetic doctor will have a discussion with the patient about their anatomy, and how it can be improved.
  • Symmetry of the chin: If your chin is asymmetrical, we can improve this with dermal filler treatment.

Why chin filler dermal injection technique is important

We believe that your chin enhancement with dermal fillers should be performed with proper technique in a medical clinic setting.

The Victorian Cosmetic Institute is committed to providing all of our patients with a quality service. Chin fillers can be combined with other cosmetic procedures. Find a full list of the cosmetic facial injections that we offer here.

Dermal chin filler technique

We use either a cannula or needle to administer dermal fillers to the chin and jawline area. The advantage of using a cannula (a very thin blunt-tipped needle) in the chin is that it may reduce the chance of rare but serious complications such as severe bruising or blindness.

Because the chin is a fibrous and muscular area, a needle will pass through the area quite easily. As the cannula has a blunt tip, it can be difficult to pass through the chin. In many cases, we use a combination of needles and cannulas. Cannula are often more suited to the sides of the chin, or the pre-jowl sulcus. Needles are often more suited to injecting the centre of the chin. Find out more about our needle and cannula techniques here

Depending on whether a needle or a cannula is used, the patient will be treated with either numbing cream or local anaesthetic prior to the procedure.

Dermal chin filler aesthetics

Ideally in a profile view, the bridge of your nose should be in line with the front edge of your chin. If your profile isn’t in this line, chin filler enhancement and dermal fillers can project your chin forwards to match this projection.

We also consider the  aesthetic of blending your chin with your jawline. Because your chin is the most forward part of the jawline, it needs to integrate well with it. The ageing process can lead to accumulated fat along the jawline in the jowls. This can often cause a ‘disconnect’ between the chin and the jawline, when the jowls drop below the jawline.

To straighten your jawline and blend your chin into it, we can use dermal filler in the pre-jowl sulcus – this is the area between the jowl and the chin. By filling this area with dermal injections, your chin will be blended into the jawline, and the appearance of your jowls will be reduced.

How long does chin filler last?

Non surgical chin augmentation using fillers can last 9-18 months with regular touch up treatments. Chin filling treatment can create a defined profile for both men and women.
