Thank you for choosing Victorian Cosmetic Institute for your dermal filler treatment. Our team is committed to supporting you during your post treatment recovery. To help you feel informed after your procedure, we’ve outlined some general care guidelines below. Should you have any concerns or require further advice, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
What to expect after dermal filler treatment
It’s normal to experience temporary side effects in the hours or days following your treatment. These typically resolve without the need for intervention. Common experiences include:
- Mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites, which typically subsides within 24 to 72 hours.
- Bruising, which may be minor or more noticeable depending on the area treated and your skin’s sensitivity. You may also consider applying Hirudoid or Arnica Cream, which are available from most pharmacies, to assist in resolving bruising.
- A feeling of firmness or lumpiness, which is often temporary and may resolve as the filler integrates with the surrounding tissue.
- Asymmetry can occur in the initial healing phase due to swelling. This typically settles as the area heals.
- Mild itching or sensitivity may occur and is generally short-lived.
- Using a cold compress (without pressure) can assist in reducing swelling or discomfort.
Immediate aftercare guidelines
To support healing and reduce the risk of complications, we recommend the following:
- Avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours, unless directed otherwise by your practitioner.
- Refrain from strenuous exercise, alcohol, hot showers, saunas, or steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours.
- Avoid applying makeup directly over the treated area for 1 to 2 hours post treatment to allow the needle entry points to close.
- Do not undergo facial treatments, such as skin needling, massage, laser, or other procedures to the area for at least 2 weeks.
- Stay upright for at least 4 hours after your treatment to minimise pressure on the treated areas.
- Avoid flying for at least 48 hours, particularly if you’ve had treatment in sensitive or vascular areas, unless cleared by your practitioner.
Follow up and review
In some cases, your doctor may recommend a review appointment 1 to 4 weeks after treatment to assess the area and ensure everything is settling as expected. This is a normal part of the clinical care process. If your practitioner has suggested a review and you have not yet booked in, you can book online or by calling 1300 863 824.
Safety and support following your procedure
While complications are rare, it’s important to monitor for symptoms that require medical review. Contact your practitioner or our Customer Care team immediately if you experience:
- Persistent or increasing pain, especially if the area becomes firm or discoloured.
- Pale, dusky, or blotchy skin discolouration, which may indicate impaired circulation.
- Excessive or worsening swelling or bruising, especially if it’s one-sided or spreads beyond the treated area.
- Signs of infection, including warmth, redness, discharge, or fever.
- Numbness or tingling that does not resolve within a few hours.
- Visual changes, such as blurred or double vision.
- Lumps or nodules that persist beyond the normal healing period.
If any of the above occur, please call our clinic immediately on 1300 863 824 and we will put you in touch with your treating doctor.
When to contact us
If you experience any unexpected or concerning symptoms – including significant swelling, pain, changes in skin colour, or unevenness – please contact us promptly on 1300 863 824.
Repeat appointments
The effects of dermal filler treatments are temporary, and how long they last can vary depending on the area treated, the type of filler used, and individual metabolism. Many patients return for maintenance treatments every 12 to 18 months, but your practitioner will recommend a personalised schedule based on your needs and response to treatment.
