Anti-wrinkle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax facial muscles that cause excessive wrinkling.  At The Victorian Cosmetic Institute, anti-wrinkle injections are one of our most popular treatments, and our practitioners specialise in this treatment. Our philosophy is to obtain natural looking results and still allow for natural expression. We offer complimentary follow-up appointments to ensure that your treatment is working to your satisfaction. We also provide a complimentary peel or underarm laser hair removal at your follow-up appointment valued at up to $165.

Anti-wrinkle injection costs: Depending on the area, the cost of these injections range from $90 to $510 for a particular area e.g frown, forehead, crows feet. People spend on average about $240 to $1320 per treatment.

The stronger the facial muscles treated, the larger the dose required. Males generally require more than females. We charge per unit of anti-wrinkle injection, and this price decreases the more units you have in one session.  For exact pricing please refer to the Anti-wrinkle injection pricing schedule.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are designed to help fill out facial areas that have lost volume with age. Much like how a grape dries out and becomes a sultana; the ageing process causes volume to be lost in the face over time, creating a general sagging appearance that is not improved by tightening the skin alone. We also use fillers for facial shaping to balance the face e.g.:  straightening a noselip enhancement, or enhancing a chin.

There are a range of temporary dermal fillers available, permanent fillers are not recommended due to risks associated with infection and other complications. Non-permanent fillers can last anywhere from 4 to 24 months. They are generally made from materials similar to your own skin’s composition, and are injected in a series, not unlike the way anti wrinkle injections are applied.

Dermal filler costs: Costs per syringe can vary from around $400 to $1650, depending which filler is being used. An average session will cost from $400 to $3000. A discount structure is offered when more than one syringe is used per session, and the best amount and type of filler needs to be determined via consultation with a cosmetic physician. For complete pricing please refer to the  Dermal Filler pricing schedule.

In the case of hyaluronic acid based fillers, hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve fillers. The price of this is $80 per session. Multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired result.

Laser/Light treatments

Laser treatments can often produce remarkable cosmetic improvements in the skin. There are two main types of lasers treatments, namely ablative and non ablative lasers. Ablative lasers literally vaporise the outer layer of skin promoting regeneration of the outer skin’s layers. These lasers include the Erbium,  and Fractional carbon dioxide lasers and are used for  laser skin resurfacing to rejuvenate skin and reduce wrinkling, and acne scarring treatment.

Non-ablative lasers use light frequencies that can be extremely specific, and keep the skin layer intact. For example, in the  removal of tattoos these lasers can be used to break down the actual tattoo pigment, with minimal disruption to the skin, so it can be reabsorbed by the body’s immune system. We also use non-ablative lasers for laser hair removal, and these lasers are also able to remove hair without affecting skin.

The  GeminiRubyMedlite lasers, and  Apogee lasers are examples of non-ablative lasers, and the Erbium and Fractional carbon dioxide lasers are examples of ablative lasers. The two types of laser have quite different cosmetic applications, however the use of both is quite common and useful for dealing with a wide range of cosmetic outcomes from skin peeling and rejuvenation, to treating acne, and removing tattoos.

Laser Treatment Costs: For procedures like tattoo removal (also see below) each prices start from $250 per session. Laser hair removal (also see below) starts at $99 per session. Pigmentation, birthmark, and capillary laser treatments often attract a Medicare rebate, but may depend on the type and severity of the problem. Any out-of-pocket fees will contribute to the Medicare Safety Net, which once exceeded, entitles you to an 80% rebate on any out-of pocket fees in excess of the Safety Net.

Acne scarring treatments with (non-fractional) erbium or carbon dioxide lasers also attract a Medicare rebate. Other procedures vary in price and an initial consultation with a doctor will provide a clear idea of what is involved. Again the usual Safety Net rules apply here.

Laser tattoo removal

An unwanted tattoo can cause considerable grief, but the good news is that lasers can be used to  fade or remove tattoos. So called ‘q-switched’ lasers are now used for tattoo removal because they have the lowest chance of scarring. Q-switched lasers emit extremely high energy, short pulses of light. These pulses actually shatter the ink particles, which are then removed by the body’s immune system. Lasers operating at different frequencies are able to target different colors, so that all tattoos can be treated in this way.

Laser Tattoo Removal Costs: Prices start at $250 per session. Usually somewhere between 10 and 20 sessions are required. For detailed prices please refer to the  Laser Tattoo Removal Pricing Schedule.

LED Phototherapy

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.  LED’s are small semiconductors that emit light continuously when a current is passed through them. In recent years LEDs emitting very specific wavelengths have been used for skin rejuvenation procedures. Unlike ablative lasers and chemical peels which are more invasive and require longer recovery times after the procedure,  LED Phototherapy involves no recovery time. And unlike lasers the light is continuous, rather than pulses. Different LED wavelengths can be used for different conditions from acne to ageing skin. Its non invasive nature makes LED Phototherapy an increasingly popular skin rejuvenation option.

LED Phototherapy Costs: Cost of the procedure can start at just $50.

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a combination of a chemical reaction and the use of light. The light, which can be a LED or laser, is used in conjunction with a substance called ALA that is applied to the problem area and activates a chemical reaction which can be used to treat skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and various skin cancers and pre cancers. The cells that cause these sorts of problems produce large amounts of a substance called ‘porphyrin’, which is sensitive to certain frequencies of light. When it is hit by these light frequencies it can produce free radicals, which destroy cells in the vicinity.

Because these free radicals stay in the area in which they were produced this procedure can be very specific in targeting unwanted cells, and will not damage the normal ones. It is for these reasons that  PDT is regarded as a highly effective tool in the battle against these sorts of skin conditions.

Photodynamic Therapy Costs:  A basic session to treat acne or skin cancers start at around $660. A consultation will help determine how many sessions may be required. Please refer to the photodynamic therapy pricing schedule for more detailed prices.

Acne laser and light treatments

The causes of acne vary for individuals, and therefore there is no one solution for all sufferers. Aside from diet and topical lotions there are a range of light based approaches which may be appropriate. Lasers such as the Smoothbeam laser can be used to tackle sebaceous overactivity, which can be a underlying cause. The laser targets the sebaceous glands and helps moderate their activity. Lasers such as the pulsed dye laser can help to destroy the bacteria that cause acne.

Photodynamic therapy or PDT is also used and works by combining a substance called ALA (which is applied to the problem area), then it is hit with special LED lights which then activate the production of free radicals that destroy the problem cells. There is usually about 7 days of recovery required for PDT.  LED phototherapy (without ALA) using red and blue lights can also be of help in reducing clogging of pores with material that can lead to acne. It is less aggressive than  Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) because it doesn’t involve applying ALA, and recovery can be immediate.

Acne Laser and Light Treatment Costs: Smoothbeam laser and pulsed dye laser treatments for acne start at $250 per session. Combined Smoothbeam, pulsed dye laser and LED phototherapy treatments are $450 per session. The cost of a single PDT session starts at around $660 for a full face treatment for acne. A medical consultation from a cosmetic physician will determine the best treatment approach to use and how many sessions may be involved.

Laser hair removal

For those wanting a more lasting solution to hair removal, laser treatments can help to achieve significant hair. Because of the differences between skin tissue and hair, lasers are naturally attracted to the hair over skin. The laser then targets the hair follicle, which is heated and further growth is inhibited. The results will not remove 100% of the hair, but a significant long-term reduction of hair can be achieved after multiple sessions. Over a period of time laser hair removal will help reduce the appearance of hair in unwanted places. Different lasers are used depending on the type of hair being removed. For many Laser hair removal is a far less painful approach to removing unwanted hair than other techniques.

Laser Hair Removal Costs: Costs will vary depending on how large the area is being treated but can start at as little as $99 for a section of the face, through to $880 for a larger section of the body such as full legs.  Please refer to the laser  hair removal pricing schedule for more detailed prices.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that is used to remove fat deposits that are not amenable to diet and exercise alone. Often genetics determines where fat will accumulate, and liposuction can help you to achieve a more balanced and smooth figure.

Usually two consultations are required with Dr. Gavin Chan prior to liposuction.

The price will depend on the areas you treat, and the number of areas you have done in one session. Theatre fees also apply.

TCA cross/subcision

TCA cross stands for trichloroacetic acid and is a chemical peel used for the  reconstruction of skin scars. It is a technique first studied in Korea as an approach for dealing with indented acne scars. The method involves applying highly concentrated TCA to indented acne scars with a wooden applicator. The acid triggers new collagen and elastin production in the skin, which helps lift up the indented sections of the skin. It has been assessed as creating noticeable improvements.

Subcision is another technique used to improve indented acne scarring, and is used on bigger scars. Often the scarred skin is attached to tissue on a deeper level and subcision works by inserting a needle under the scar, which helps release it, so the skin can have a more even appearance and noticeably less indented. Different approaches work better depending on the nature and extent of the problem, and a consultation will help determine the best approach.

TCA cross / subcision cost: Because acne scarring has so many variables, a consultation is required before the best approach and therefore pricing can be determined however as a guide TCA cross/subcision starts at $250 and goes up to $990 for a single session.

Skin Needling

Skin needling involves puncturing the skin with multiple small needles which are attached to a cylinder and run over the area to be treated. The needles instigate collagen growth, and help to revitalise the skin.  Skin needling is used to treat acne scarring, as well as other forms of scarring and wrinkles. The procedure starts with a local anaesthetic being applied to the area being treated. Recovery typically takes around 7 to 10 days, with some 2 to 5 sessions being required. The technique has many advantages not least being it works well with different skin pigmentations, and results are said to be generally very good with patients noticing a fresher, smoother, more youthful looking skin.

Cost: A full face session is $2950, and cheeks only is $2250. Anything up to five sessions may be required for best results. For complete costs please refer to the  skin needling pricing schedule.

Keloid/hypertrophic scarring treatments

Scarring is a normal part of any healing process but there are instances where the scar tissue itself becomes a problem. In the place of  keloid scarring, the scar moves beyond the boundary of the original injury, and can be itchy and aggravating, not to mention lumpy in appearance. Surgical approaches can sometimes make it worse. Keloid scarring is said to be more prominent for darker skin types.  Hypertrophic scarring is when excessive scarring occurs with the boundary of the original injury, and usually gets better with time. Treatment approaches include t cortisone injections, ‘dry ice’ (liquid nitrogen), 5-Flurouracil injections (5-FU) Lasers and sometimes surgical excision. It can be difficult to tell the difference in scar types initially so a consultation with a cosmetic physician is required to determine the right treatment plan.

Keloid / Hypertrophic scarring treatment costs: Treatment options vary so significantly that a consultation is required before a course of treatment.  Injections or laser treatment for keloid scarring start at $150 per session, and combined laser/injectable treatments start at $250 per session. For a more detailed cost table, click here.

Radio wave surgery

Benign skin lesions such as skin tags, warts, benign naevi (moles), and seborrhoiec keratosis (benign skin lesion) can be removed without cutting the skin or causing bleeding with radio wave surgery. Scarring is often minimised using this method instead of using a scalpel to remove the lesions.

Radio wave surgery costs: $200 for the first lesion and $100 for each thereafter. More than one session may be required.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are used for regenerating skin tissue by using a substance to remove the outer skin layers. It is in essence a controlled wound, and in the healing process skin collagen remodeling is instigated and skin is visibly rejuvenated. It is highly effective for treating sun damage, visible ageing, and pigmentation issues.  Chemical peels can have a smoothing effect, giving the appearance of more youthful skin.

Different substances are applied to the skin depending on the problem being treated, and peels come in three basic types, namely shallow, medium or deep. In the case of the latter swelling may last for up to 3 days, but any discomfort is minimal and short term. Chemical peels provide a cost effective alternative to laser treatments and results can be very positive.

Chemical Peel Costs: Costs for chemical peels start from as little as $60, through to $1000 for a deep peel. A cosmetic physician will be able to determine the most appropriate peel for you. Please click the link for complete details on  chemical peel pricing.

Microdermabrasion/Epidermal levelling

Microdermabrasion is a process where the skin is deeply exfoliated using a gentle vacuum that brings the skin into contact with a diamond coated head. It can be used for acne, or to help improve overall skin condition, and helps improve lymphatic drainage and the removal of dead skin cells. Usually a session is about 60 minutes and is not unlike a facial. Some redness may occur, but soon passes, and around six sessions at fortnightly intervals is suggested. Epidermal leveling is a similar procedure that involves scraping a blade over the skin. It also removes dead cells and slightly more skin, but is in essence very similar.

Microdermabrasion / Epidermal Leveling Costs: A basic 1 hour Microdermabrasion session starts at $129. Packages of 6 can be purchased for $600. For comprehensive costs information please view the microdermabrasion pricing information.
