Are you fed up with feeling distressed and embarrassed about your man boobs? Would you like to feel confident with your appearance at the beach, when you workout or when you take your shirt off? Millions of teens and adult men worldwide also suffer from man boobs, which can be treated with liposuction.
So what are man boobs? According to Dr Gavin Chan (MBBS, Cosmetic Physician, Liposuctionist) “man boobs is a colloquial term for male glandular tissue enlargement of the chest.” Gynaecomastia (also known as man boobs) occurs as a result of excessive chest fat, which in some cases resembles a female breast shape.
Dr Gavin Chan explains “it’s important that your Cosmetic Doctor determines whether your problem is due to glandular tissue or chest fat.” This will be discussed in detail at your consultation with our highly trained and experienced Cosmetic Doctors where tests can be ordered. These can include blood tests, ultrasounds and hormonal tests. If you have glandular tissue evident under the nipple, it may indicate hormonal imbalances.
What causes man boobs to develop?
Known causes of man boobs (the enlargement of the male chest) can be physiological or pathological including:
- Hormonal disorders, including increased levels of oestrogen or decreased levels of testosterone
- Excessive consumption of drugs or alcohol
- Anabolic steroid use
- Klinefelter’s syndrome
- Weight fluctuation or obesity
- Chronic liver or kidney disease
- HIV infection
Pseudo-gynaecomastia is a type of man boobs that have been caused by an accumulation of fat with usually no underlying medical pathology.
How can man boobs be surgically treated?
Cosmetic Surgeons who have experience and training with this procedure should treat your gynaecomastia medically and surgically. Dr Gavin Chan notes after the underlying cause of your man boobs has been determined and treated (if hormone imbalances are evident) it’s possible to treat your man boobs. Your Cosmetic Surgeon has a number of techniques available including:
- Removing excess fat, skin and/or breast tissue from your chest
- Ultrasonic liposuction
Surgery and liposuction are often used to treat man boobs during one surgical procedure. We remove glandular tissue surgically because liposuction can’t be used on glandular tissues, as the cannula ports are too fine to suction them out. Liposuction is performed with a cannula that is inserted through small skin incisions. The cannula is attached to a vacuum source that is passed back and forth through the treatment areas. Liposuction techniques include vaser ultrasonic liposuction or Microaire power-assisted liposuction.
Who is usually a good candidate for man boob liposuction treatment?
Men who are the best candidates for liposuction in the chest area usually have an excess of fat in one or both breasts. Our male patients who have liposuction treatment for man boobs are:
- Distressed and/or shy about removing their shirt in public. Some patients report they avoid participating in sport or exercising because of the way their breasts appear.
- Keen to improve their aesthetic body proportions by reducing their breast size
- Suffering psychological consequences due to the size of their breasts
The development of male breasts can be a very distressing condition, particularly if it occurs during the teenage years. Men in their 40’s and 50’s who experience weight changes and/or hormonal deficiencies can also develop male breasts (gynaecomastia). Since 2005 our highly trained and experienced Cosmetic Surgeons have performed thousands of liposuction procedures on male breasts. It’s important to note that each patient is assessed on a case-by-case basis and that thorough consultations are conducted before every liposuction surgery.
What happens during a liposuction man boob removal procedure?
Your liposuction man boob procedure will be performed in our state of the art, accredited day surgery centre and can be performed under light sedation, local anaesthesia or general anaesthetic. Prior to your procedure, you’ll meet your Cosmetic Surgeon again for a final pre-operative consultation where they’ll photograph and mark the areas to be treated.
In the operating theatre, an intravenous cannula is then inserted into the back of your hand for the sedatives and analgesics that will be used during your procedure. Your skin will be thoroughly cleaned with antiseptic solution before small incisions are made in the treatment area. To help the fat layer expand and make it easier to remove with the cannula, we use a local anaesthetic solution into the fat of the treatment area.
During your consultations with your Cosmetic Surgeon they will inform you of the possible risks and complications of liposuction. It’s important to note that while liposuction is usually a safe and effective procedure that improves your body shape, you must be fully aware of these risks.
