Did you know that one of the most common signs of ageing is saggy jowls and a less defined jawline? When your jowls get fleshier and start to droop down, your face becomes wider, even square shaped. This can result in your face looking older and even taking on a ‘sad face’ look. Face jowls can develop as part of the natural ageing as a result of gravity, a loss of skin elasticity and a weakening of your skin’s attachment to muscles. But you don’t have to ‘go under the knife’ to improve the shape of your jawline.

Dr Gavin Chan (MBBS, Cosmetic Doctor, Liposuctionist) explains that the Nefertiti lift is a non-surgical lower facelift that uses anti-wrinkle injections to redefine the jaw and neck, resulting in a more contoured, youthful appearance.

What is the Nefertiti lift?

The Nefertiti lift is named after the Egyptian Queen and chief consort of the Egyptian Pharaoh in 1370-1330 BC. Renowned for her sculptured jawline and smooth neck, many people consider her face to be an ideal shape. Due to the natural ageing process, this naturally tapered triangular face can morph into a square face with droopy jowls.

For people not wanting to have surgery, anti-wrinkle injections can be used to resemble a Nefertiti shaped face. By counteracting the effects of the loss of skin elasticity, anti-wrinkle injections can soften marionette lines on your neck while redefining the jawline.

During the Nefertiti lift treatment, your Cosmetic Doctor or Cosmetic Nurse will use anti-wrinkle injections along the lower jawline and neck muscles. This creates an uplifting effect while it improves jowl sagging. When the results of the Nefertiti lift become apparent 2 to 7 days post treatment, you can expect to see a more defined, taut jawline that looks refined and youthful.

What happens during a Nefertiti lift?

When Dr Gavin Chan (MBBS, Cosmetic Doctor, Liposuctionist) treated Amelia with a Nefertiti lift his main aim was to balance her lower face with her upper face anti-wrinkle injections treatment. He noted that, “the procedure performed using anti-wrinkle injections enhances the jawline to create a more youthful look. In Amelia’s case we are preventing any sagging effects of the jawline.”

As Dr Gavin Chan consulted with Amelia, he explained that it’s important the Cosmetic Doctor or Cosmetic Nurse is fully trained in facial aesthetics. It is important they ask their patient to show expressions to analyse which muscles need to have anti-wrinkle treatment. During this consultation, Dr Gavin Chan explained which muscles can be treated to prevent the jawline sagging and drooping. The major muscles in the lower face that effect the shape of the face and jawline include:

  • Platysmal muscles
  • Mentalis muscle
  • Depressor anguli oris (also called ‘DAO’)
  • Depressor labii inferioris

Dr Gavin Chan noted, “It is important to consider the function of the muscles, we can’t completely remove this. But some of the muscles will also contribute to the aging process and will make us produce expressions which make us look older than we feel.”

When the mentalis muscle is activated, it elevates the chin. During the natural ageing process, it elevates further up towards your nose. This can create a ‘witch’ type facial appearance, making you look older. The muscle called depressor anguli oris (DAO) is a depressor of the mouth corner and creates a ‘sad face’ look. Many people use this muscle unknowingly, causing their mouth corners to pull down. The platysmal muscle is attached to the underside of your jaw and when it contracts it pulls the face downwards. Anti-wrinkle injections used in the platysmal muscle will stop the face pulling down. Dr Gavin Chan explained that anti-wrinkle injections are used to reverse the normal action of your facial muscles. When a depressor muscle is injected it will elevate. When an elevator muscle is injected it will depress.

Before treating Amelia with anti-wrinkle injections, Dr Gavin Chan used the Accuvein to mark where her facial veins. Knowing this and avoiding them during them during the injection process reduces the likelihood of bruising. To minimise any pain during the Nefertiti lift treatment (10.58) Dr Gavin Chan used ice.

A follow up consultation is important after your Nefertiti lift to assess whether more anti-wrinkle injections are needed to meet your expectations. When Dr Gavin Chan assessed Amelia’s face at the 3-week mark, he noted that some areas required further anti-wrinkle injections to improve her facial symmetry.

How to get the best Nefertiti lift using anti-wrinkle injections in Melbourne

A Nefertiti lift is an effective non-surgical lower facelift that can reduce your jowls and improve the shape of your jawline. At your consultation with our Cosmetic Doctors or Cosmetic Nurses, they will assess if you are an ideal patient for this walk-in, walk-out anti-ageing treatment. Nefertiti lifts can be used as a preventive treatment for patients who have early signs of drooping jowls. If you have a lot of loose skin in your lower face it will be more challenging to achieve a lifting effect using anti-wrinkle injections. In these cases surgery may be a better alternative.

Since 2005, we have successfully treated thousands of people’s lower face with anti-wrinkle injections so they look and feel younger. Led by Dr Gavin Chan, our highly trained and experienced Cosmetic Doctors and Cosmetic Nurses are passionate about creating natural-looking, subtle changes to your face.
